Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the memory-learning process based on 65 first-year students of the Bachelor's degree in Nursing with low academic performance from the Faculty of Nursing Technology in Santiago de Cuba, over a period of one year. Variables such as motivation, concentration, study habits, short-term memory, sleep disorders, upper electrical activity, physical activity, and toxic habits were analyzed. The information obtained through the data collection form and the 10-word and paired tests were expressed in tables and graphs after their respective statistical analyses, determining a predominance of students with a poor memory-learning process, caused by multifactorial reasons such as lack of motivation, disliking the subject, difficulty concentrating due to academic overload, and poor study habits. Insomnia and drowsiness prevailed as sleep disorders, along with normal electrical activity. No statistically significant relationship was found between motivation and short-term memory, nor between tobacco consumption and the memory-learning process; but there was a relationship between short-term memory and concentration, and between the memory-learning process related to coffee and alcohol consumption.
