Abstract

Healthcare professionals have many reasons to learn English. In the healthcare industry, people's lives are at stake, so any misunderstanding is risky. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to language to foster a relationship of trust and understanding between healthcare personnel, patients, and family members. The choice of words used is very important to avoid confusion and to calm and reassure family members. The new competency profile of nursing professionals, scientific and health development, the free movement of healthcare professionals internationally, and increasing sociocultural diversity require nurses to possess specific spoken and written English skills. An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted in the nursing program at the Moa Medical Sciences Branch in line with the guidelines of Resolution No. 165/19 issued by the Ministry of Higher Education, which establishes the gradual incorporation of English language proficiency certification into the all programs plans. Nursing students at the Moa Medical Sciences Branch consider the subject's effectiveness within the curriculum, although there is notable variability in the importance given to it: 84%consider it an indispensable subject in nurse training, 12%consider it necessary, and 4%consider it unnecessary or an alternative.
